Buprenorphine is a partial mu-opioid receptor agonist and kappa-opioid antagonist used for neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) when the neonate was exposed prenatally to buprenorphine. Sublingual formulation is used in neonates; associated with shorter length of treatment and length of stay compared with morphine or methadone in clinical trials.
